Savolinna is a town nestled in a region with a large number of lakes and beautiful landscapes. Each year the town hosts the “Opera Festival”, one of the most sophisticated and important musical events in Europe.
The Savonlinna Opera Festival takes place in the whole month of July and includes operas such as Madama Butterfly, Otello, Faust and many others.
What is so unusual about this festival is certainly the setting. It is held inside the picturesque Olavinlinna, St Olaf’s Castle built on a small island on the lake in 1475 which is famous for its superb acoustics.
